I was unaware of this new CSS spec.

I was unaware of this new CSS spec. It looks like its optimized for flexible/resizeable GUIs like desktop developers are used to.

The support matrix looks like its in early days still: http://caniuse.com/#search=Grid

According to http://www.chromestatus.com/features the feature is in progress for Chrome 32 or later.
