Excellent article. I like that they started with Corning, a company that’s always fascinated me. Did you know that Corning made the 5-meter primary mirror for Palomar Observatory’s Hale telescope in the ’30s? They cast it from 20 tons of Pyrex in New York, gradually cooled it to room temperature for 11 months(!), then shipped it to California. It’s still in the top-20 largest optical telescopes today.
