I’ve been seeking real data about what the frequency of bitrot truly is. I’ve yet to find the data that convinces me that everyone not using ZFS or BTRFS is screwed.
Also, I have issue with the authors statement that once you have bitrot, it’s guaranteed to become part of your backups. Depends on the method- a random but flipping in storage is silent, it won’t alter the files size on disk or modified date. If that’s the backup software’s criteria to back up or not, it won’t be flagged as changed. If it’s by MD5, it should be backed up.
