I recently heard that the UW Synchrotron is closing after ~50 years of history after being defunded by the NSF in 2012. I don’t know anybody who has worked there, but I knew about it (and bicycled by its rural Dane county location many times) and some of my astronomy colleagues had help from the staff during instrument building.
