Wisconsin is not flat!

Wisconsin is not flat!

This is the speed/elevation chart from one of my favorite recent bike rides. I rode out of town and did four laps back and forth over Observatory Road which features a pretty steep little hill with about 200ft of climbing on the back side.

I use the Endomondo app on Android to track my rides, but something was wonky with the GPS recording because the return trip is about 30ft higher elevation on the chart event though I took the exact same route. You can also clearly see that my ride home was quite a bit slower than my ride out. 🙂

  1. Unless your device augments the GPS elevation with an accurate barometric altimeter, the elevation data will be poor. As I understand it, GPS elevation data is much more degraded than lat/lon data to prevent cheap GPS from being used as missile guidance.

  2. Hey, Below is a nice 37mi bike ride I mapped out for you! You can ride the Military Ridge trail to my starting point in Ridgeway (or take a much more interesting route of your own design). When you get to the end of my mapped route you can call my phone number and I’ll pick up you and your bike with my pick-up, then we can catch some dinner, look at stars, geek out, whatever, and on the morrow I can drop you at the beginning of another vertically-challenged homeward route. 🙂 This is a serious offer. If you’re interested, we can consult calendars and schedule it! https://goo.gl/maps/QbUE8
