I don’t usually reshare xkcd because I assume everyone in my circles already reads it. But this one is really significant to me. Like the “pale blue dot” moment, to me this image really captures the island-in-space nature of our planet. The fact that Earth represents roughly half of all the walkable/sailable surfaces of our solar system is something I never grasped at a high level before, although I guess I technically knew it at a math level. When we talk about expanding humanity’s presence into the universe, there actually isn’t that much usable acreage left in our solar system relative to what we already have access to.
