This is a surprise to me. I naively thought our per capita water use was increasing over time. Wild guess: is this dominated by increasing water efficiency in agriculture??

The latest data on United States water consumption from the U.S Geological Survey shows that, contrary to popular belief, water withdrawals in the country are actually declining. Water consumption in 2010 was lower than any other time in the past 40 years despite the enormous increase in the GDP over the same time period. This trend disproves the claim that increased consumption of water is necessary for a growing economy and indicates that the United States has reached the era of “peak water.”
