I really enjoy the All Things Linguistic blog by Gretchen McCulloch and have linked to a few of them here. Gretchen recently posted an accumulation of some of her best articles and nearly every link in the list is worth reading.

My favorite funny one is a great response to the overasked question “So you’re a linguist. How many languages do you know?” which is “So you’re a biologist. How many pets do you own?”

  1. If there were no means of communicating in our own circles and especially outside of them, Earth would not have the multitude of human life. Most if not all the holidays we celebrate in the USA and around the world comes from ancient cultures long gone. Through linguistics (word of mouth, writing, songs, etc.), we are able to pass down these ancient holidays, songs, and endless things that most may not realize are alive through linguistics.
