Bikely.com is my favorite site for mapping and sharing bicycle routes. They have a very intuitive UI for drawing on Google maps and letting you annotate the waypoints to make descriptive cue sheets. But… They’ve been down more than up recently. The word on the street is that they’re going through a major upgrade to get better scalability and features, and predict a relaunch in a week or so. I sure hope they finish soon!

I’ve been using iPhoto’11 a lot more in recent months after being a heavy iPhoto’09 user. Three observations:

1) they changed a lot of UI to make it appear slicker. Generally, it’s a lot less intuitive though. For example, to edit the date of a photo you need to go to a menu option instead of editing it right in the info pane.

2) face recognition got better (no surprise). Happily they added a UI for wading through all unnamed faces, but it’s hard to find and won’t let you look at the whole photo for context

3) behind the scenes, the SQLite database that holds metadata is completely different. All the same data is there, but the joins all need to be rewritten from scratch. I suspect the new schema comes from Aperture, but it might just be a CoreData rewrite.

This is one of the many reasons why I like working with open source software more than closed source.

Amazon has “A Dance with Dragons” as #6 on it’s best seller list. What surprises me is that it’s listed as “150 days in the top 100”. The publish date is July 12 (15 days ago) so I guess they must be counting pre-orders on the submit date rather than the ship date.

This infographic shows relative payback rates to musicians for various music sales outlets like self, cdbaby, iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. It claims you need to get FOUR MILLION Spotify plays per month to earn US minimum wage. Wow.

My biggest problem with G+ so far is the same problem with Facebook: there’s no ranking of importance or significance for each post. For example, I greatly enjoy about 20% of the posts from Abraham Williams but the other 80% is noise to me (sorry Abraham) so I’m tempted to relegate him to a black hole circle. I wish I could say I want only his posts that reach +2 or something like that — like /. or digg moderation.
